The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley advances the rights of historically excluded individuals and families across Santa Clara County through legal services, strategic advocacy, and educational outreach. We serve over 10,000 individuals and families each year through our Housing Program, Children & Youth Program, and Health Program. Our attorneys, social workers, and advocates use legal advocacy as a tool for social change by crafting inventive solutions to the legal issues facing low-income people in our region.

With a staff of 90 employees, we are the largest provider of free legal services in the South Bay region of the Bay Area. Our work is collaborative and meaningful and includes plenty of opportunities for professional growth. As a staff, we actively engage in discussions about race, equity, and inclusion, and are actively working towards a Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)-centered legal services practice that incorporates community and movement lawyering. 

 

POSITION SUMMARY

The Law Foundation of Silicon Valley is seeking a full-time Paralegal/Administrative Assistance for its Housing Department. The Law Foundation is focused on the prevention of displacement of low-income individuals and communities of color through both direct legal services, including unlawful detainer defense, and system change work, including impact litigation and policy advocacy. 

The Paralegal will support the work of attorneys at the Law Foundation who represent tenants in eviction Court and other Court proceedings. The Paralegal will help manage the organization of physical and electronic case files,  prepare legal documents for attorneys, may file documents, and will maintain a calendaring system for cases. The Paralegal may assist with other administrative duties, may help with interpretation, and may help with grant reporting. The ideal candidate will have a passion for social justice, be able to work with multiple individuals, and work in a fast-paced environment.  

 
Requirements: 
  • Provide administrative and litigation support to attorneys and advocates including case file maintenance and filing documents with the court
  • Preparing judicial council forms 
  • Process, scan and e-deliver mail onsite, daily
  • Request records from the Court
  • Prepare legal documents
  • Create and maintain a calendar system for cases
  • Create and maintain physical files, pleading binders, and trial binders
  • File (E-file) and service Court documents
  • Format and draft discovery requests and responses
  • Format and cite-check motions and other legal pleadings
  • Run and create reports
  • Service documents, including personal service
  • Other administrative tasks as needed, such as interpretation or help with grant reporting 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Paralegal certificate preferred
  • Experience with legal case management, case filing, e-filing, and service
  • Ability to handle detail-oriented administrative tasks
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to interact effectively with office staff, clients, court staff and community partners
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage and maintain a calendar
  • Ability to manage and main case files, both physical files and electronic files
  • Ability to be flexible, multi-task and take direction from multiple sources
  • Experience working with individuals from multi-ethnic communities
  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Teams)
  • California Driver’s License preferred, good driving record
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish or Vietnamese is preferred
  • Experience with Lawyaw, LegalServer; Odyssey for E-filing, 
  • Ability to work onsite in our office

  • Work environment: The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to loud. The work environment will be ever changing with volunteers, clients, vendors and staff members all walking through and sharing the same space; The temperature in the work environment will range from cold to warm

 

COMPENSATION

 

The hourly range for this position starts at $26.10/hour depending on experience. All compensation determined by the wage table of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between SEIU Local 521 and LFSV.
