$39840 - $53230 / year 

The Paralegal A Youth Specialist is a position within Texas RioGrande Legal Aid’s. The primary duties and activities may include the following and any other case-related activities and duties consistent with assisting attorneys in the practice of law:

  • Conduct eligibility and substantive interviews in person and by telephone, which may at times take place outside the regular office setting;

  • Manage the Project hotline, voicemail, email address communications;

  • Provide basic information and referrals to applicants, including those who are ineligible for services;

  • Provide youth appropriate mentoring and guidance to applicants and clients, and ongoing oversight to assist applicants and clients in the process of resolving their legal issues;

  • Interview clients and witnesses;

  • Conduct follow-up of assigned cases, including investigating facts, obtaining additional information, regular review and follow-up with clients and service providers, and researching law;

  • Prepare legal documents and other necessary documents to assist clients in resolution of their legal issues;

  • Assist with outreach activities, including workshops for foster youth, aged-out youth, and a variety of service providers that work with the foster youth population;

  • Represent the Project in meetings, workgroups, trainings, and other activities with other organizations that address foster youth issues;

  • Post updated and new materials on the Project’s web page; maintain active links and resources on the Project’s web page;

  • Oversee updates to the Project’s “Aging Out Guide” and publication process;

  • Process requests for “Aging Out Guide” and brochures;

  • Assist attorney in processing youths’ requests for CPS records, foster youth benefits, identification documents, and other materials, including completing and obtaining necessary authorizations, forms and documentation, and following up on requests tooversee they are processed on a timely basis;

  • Develop forms and letters for case handling;

  • Attend and participate in community group meetings and educational forums to conduct intake and make community legal education presentations;

  • Accompany client and/or project staff to court, social service providers, public agencies, and CPS proceedings and meetings;

  • Prepare legal educational and outreach materials;

  • Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into client database and other requirements;

  • Prepare administrative reports required by TRLA;

  • Translate (if bilingual);

  • Notarize legal documents;

  • Serve process and subpoenas; and

  • Any other duties required by the branch or team manager.

Requirements: 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with youth between the ages of 15-22;

  • Strong interest in working with youth population;

  • Good verbal, reading, and writing skills;

  • Computer skills, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

  • College degree required;

  • Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, and a self-starter;

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel; and

  • Preference given to alumnus of foster care
