Housing Staff Attorney (Hybrid)

Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, Inc. “GBLA” is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization whose mission is “to promote social change and justice by providing high-quality legal services to the low-income community.”   GBLA ‘s service area is Kern County, California.  It is the state’s third-largest county in land area. 

 

GBLA seeks an attorney for our Housing Practice. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Litigation, the housing attorney will provide civil legal representation in housing-related matters for low-income litigants who remain unrepresented and when the other party has an attorney.

 

The Staff Attorney will carry a personal caseload litigating unlawful detainer cases, which includes client interviews; drafting pleadings, motions, discovery, briefs, and correspondence; negotiating with outside parties; representing clients in court and conducting trials; Providing legal counsel, advice, and representation to low-income individuals regarding evictions and related matters; Act as a resource regarding unlawful detainer cases and other housing issues

 

Requirements: 

Candidate must be an active member of the California State Bar of California or a member of the Bar of another state and willing to take the California Bar at the next available opportunity. The ideal candidate would have thorough knowledge and experience in housing.

 

The attorney applicant must have excellent analytical, organizational, and writing skills; strong oral and written communication skills; strong litigation skills in California courts; demonstrated commitment to public interest advocacy; a high degree of initiative and willingness to work collaboratively with others; demonstrated ability to supervise and provide leadership; ability to travel throughout the county; and bilingual capacity in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Compensation:

The anticipated salary range for this full-time exempt role is $90,000-$104,000 per year, with a final offer dependent on factors such as experience, job-related skills, and qualifications.

  • 2+ to 4 years   3 weeks/15 days / 9.375 hrs. per month
  • 4+ to 8 years   4 weeks/20 days/ 12.5 hrs. per month
  • 8+ years          5 weeks/25 days/14.42 hrs. per month
