Temporary Family Justice Center Paralegal Representation for Victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault

Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provide a wide-range of legal services aimed to address issues that disproportionately impact the poor. These services include litigation, providing training and technical assistance, and community education. NLSLA is seeking a Paralegal for its collaborative project with the Van Nuys Family Justice Center (FJC). The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest and working with victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is required. The Paralegal works under the supervision of attorney staff, and will be based at the Family Justice Center and NLSLA’s Pacoima office, providing services to survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. The Paralegal will be responsible for intake and eligibility screening and will provide information and legal assistance on a range of legal issues focusing on immigration, family law, and victim’s rights. Legal services may also include housing, public benefits, employment, health care, and consumer issues. Paralegal will also maintain their own caseload.

Requirements: 

Applicants may be Certified Paralegals and Paralegal Trainees. Trainee must be currently enrolled in a college pursuing a degree or paralegal certificate. Preferred candidates must have at least one year of legal experience working with victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. The candidate will be able to handle significant client contact and is dedicated to working with non-profit public interest organizations. Ability to work independently with moderate supervision. Must have excellent interpersonal skills, ability to conduct research, and problem-solve. The candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish, coupled with patience and sensitivity with people in crisis situations. Experience working with low-income individuals and families preferred.
