Tax & Bankruptcy Attorney

Description: 

Legal Aid Society has an immediate opening for a Tax and Bankruptcy Law attorney in its Nashville office. Attorney will provide legal representation to eligible clients in civil cases, with a primary focus on income tax controversies with the IRS, educating English as a Second Language persons on tax issues, and bankruptcies. As a part of a holistic approach, representation may include varying areas of law as needed. Participates in administrative advocacy, litigation in state, tax, bankruptcy, and federal courts, and community education for clients in accordance with program guidelines and priorities and the Code of Professional Responsibility.

 

This position is funded in part by an IRS Low Income Tax Clinic grant that covers 91 counties in Tennessee. Legal Aid Society has thirty-four attorneys in eight offices in Middle and East Tennessee. Its attorneys provide low-income people expert legal assistance at all levels of state and federal court. Its staff includes national authorities in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer law, federal income taxation, health advocacy, nonprofit group representation, social security and special education. Requirements: 

Qualifications: Applicants must be a law school graduate. Admitted to practice law in Tennessee or, if admitted to practice in another state, eligible for admission to the Tennessee Bar by reciprocity preferred. Three years of legal experience as an attorney preferred. Demonstrated interest in public interest law, the problems of disadvantages communities, income tax controversies and bankruptcies. Commitment to high quality representation and a desire to handle cases that benefit individual clients as well as those impacting their communities. Must have ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; experienced in public speaking and training others on the law; organized; and work with a team and independently. Experience working under and reporting on federal grants and proficiency with Microsoft Office software and Legal Files database preferred. Fluency in written and spoken Spanish language a plus.
