Staff Attorney (Lawyers Preventing and Ending Homelessness Project)

Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides life changing legal services to address the critical issues that significantly impact the poor. NLSLA’s work includes litigation, training, policy advocacy, technical assistance, and community education. 

NLSLA is currently seeking an Attorney to work in the Antelope, San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys.  The attorney will be part of a team of advocates focused on serving the needs of people experiencing homelessness and those at-risk of homelessness in conjunction with a collaborative of community partners.   The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of clients in multiple forums across multiple practice areas. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience assisting low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis. The ideal candidate must possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and well-developed analytical skills. The candidate should be self-motivated with the ability to multi-task. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish, Armenian, Chinese or another language spoken in poverty communities is strongly preferred.

Compensation:

Salary $60,000 + - Commensurate with experience. Excellent Benefits which include: choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.

 

Duties and

Responsibilities:

  • Representation of families and individuals that are experiencing homelessness or are at-risk of homelessness in a broad range of legal practice areas including: housing, public benefits, consumer, employment, re-entry and family law.  
  • Creating and conducting trainings for community partners, Know Your Rights workshops for clients and staffing legal clinics. 
  • Responsibility for maintaining relationships with our community partners by attending regular case management meetings. 
  • Regular travel to other NLSLA branch offices, courts, government agencies, shelters and community-based organizations throughout the Antelope Valley, San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley. 

 

 

 

 

Minimum

Qualifications:

 

Must be licensed and eligible to practice law in California. Prior experience working with the homeless or in public benefits, consumer, housing and/or family law is helpful. 2-3 years of housing experience preferred.

The NLSLA staff of 135+, including 65 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice.
