Staff Attorney (Crime Survivor Program)

Disability Rights Oregon is seeking a Staff Attorney for our Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program who thrives in a team environment and has the drive and determination to advocate for people with disabilities who are survivors of crime.

The VOCA Attorney performs direct legal representation and advocacy services for individuals with disabilities who are survivors of all types of crimes, including sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and abuse. The Attorney will enforce laws relating to the rights of people with disabilities and providing information and advice for self-advocacy to extend and enhance services to crime survivors with disabilities.

Requirements: 

What we are looking for:

  • A juris doctorate from an accredited law school, required.
  • Active membership in Oregon State Bar or willingness to explore either reciprocity or to take the Oregon State Bar.
  • Demonstrated advocacy and/or social services experience.
  • Broad knowledge of quality services for people with disabilities.
  • Broad knowledge of dynamics of trauma and impact of violence on adult crime survivors, especially survivors of domestic, physical and sexual violence, including evidence-based interview techniques.
  • Experience in criminal law, civil rights, disability law, and/or other public interest law.
  • Ability to work in a nonjudgmental way with survivors of violence and treat all people with dignity and respect.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be able to provide people with disabilities the opportunity for self-determination and empowerment.
  • Patience, negotiating skills, and ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and communication needs.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and willingness to travel as needed.

What is the Duration of this Position?

This is grant-funded positions for 3-years. Although the grant is expected to end on December 31, 2023, the hope is that additional funding will be obtained to extend employment.
