Medical Legal Community Partnership (MLCP) | Health Consumer Center (HCC) Staff Attorney

Description: 

The Staff Attorney is expected to develop broad legal expertise in the various substantive legal areas impacting the social determinants of health and served through NLSLA’s innovative MLP-LA pilot project. Under the supervision of the MLCP Associate Supervising Attorney and NLSLA Coordinated Attorney Team Supervising Attorney, the Staff Attorney will:

  • Play an active role in the implementation of the MLP-LA project including assisting in the development of processes and protocols;
  • Collaborate with WPC staff, healthcare providers, and other legal partners including through attendance in monthly clinical case review meetings;
  • Provide substantive support to paralegal staff triaging technical assistance and direct client assistance requests; 
  • Serve as an escalation point for WPC staff or legal partners to address issues related to technical assistance and direct client referrals;
  • Participate in reporting efforts to track data and outcomes obtained through the MLP-LA project;
  • Conduct process, skills, and substantive trainings of WPC staff;
  • Maintain an active caseload composed of technical assistance requests from WPC staff, special emergency patient referrals, and representation to other patients referred through the MLP-LA project. Advocacy may include informal, administrative, litigation and/or policy work on a wide variety of substantive legal areas impacting the social determinants of health. 

NLSLA is seeking a Staff Attorney for its MLCP division in the NLSLA Health Consumer Center (HCC) to staff its innovative Medical Legal Partnership– MLP-LA pilot project, a component of Los Angeles County Department of Health Services’ Whole Person Care (WPC) system.  The Staff Attorney will play a key role in the delivery and coordination of services through this one of a kind project, bringing crucial legal support to the most vulnerable patients within the Los Angeles County health system who encounter legal problems.  This position will be operating out of the Wellness Center and the Pacoima Office.

 

The ideal candidate will be a skillful attorney who can excel in a fast-paced, dynamic anti-poverty law practice and is capable of fiercely advocating on behalf of NLSLA clients in multiple forums. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis. The ideal candidate must possess: strong research, organizational, and analytical skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; and the capacity to collaborate closely and successfully with healthcare and legal partners. Of critical importance is that the candidate be self-motivated with the ability to work independently. Bilingual Spanish proficiency is preferred.

Neighborhood Legal Services (NLSLA) is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the San Fernando Valley for 50 years and the San Gabriel, Pomona & Antelope Valleys since 2001. The NLSLA staff of 120+, including 50 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights, and environmental justice. The NLSLA program offices are located in the cities of Glendale, Pacoima. El Monte and Boyle Heights.

 

Requirements: 

Entry level attorney (0-5 years’ experience) who is highly motivated and passionate about public service work, with sensitivity to those in crisis. Excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, healthcare providers, community organizations, attorneys, the judiciary and the public. Background in substantive legal areas impacting impoverished communities and experience working with low-income organizations and client groups preferred. Spanish bilingual skills strongly preferred. California Bar membership is required.
