Managing Attorney

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands seeks a managing attorney who is passionate about its mission to provide leadership in its Gallatin office. Managing Attorney will be responsible for day-to-day management of the Gallatin office and promote efficient and high quality advocacy; encourage the staff to work together and to work at a level commensurate with their experience and skill; encourage staff to function as a part of a regional law firm using the practice group model that maximizes the use of its limited resources to achieve the greatest possible benefits and systemic solutions for clients and other low-income people who may face similar legal problems. Provide legal representation to eligible clients and carry a caseload of active cases on behalf of clients. Will participate in administrative advocacy and community education for clients. The Gallatin office staff includes two additional attorneys and two support staff. This office’s practice areas include housing, consumer, elder law, health and benefits law, and family law cases involving domestic violence. The office primarily serves clients residing in Sumner, Wilson, Trousdale, Smith, and Macon counties. Additional funding for this office includes VOCA, Title III, United Way of Sumner County, THDA, and several foundations.

Requirements: 

Qualifications: License to practice law and legal and management experience required. A minimum of four years legal and three years management experience preferred. Preferred experience to include a demonstrated interest in public interest law, supervising staff, supporting the practice group model, and complying with federal and state grant regulations, including experience with the Legal Services Corporation. Preferred applicants will have a commitment to high quality representation and a desire to handle cases that benefit individual clients as well as those impacting their communities. Ability to relate to the needs of people of diverse backgrounds and adhere to confidentiality standards. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. Excellent interpersonal skills. Experience with Microsoft Office software and databases. Residence or intent to reside in the office’s service area, the ability to work effectively with clients and colleagues and a sense of humor are preferred. Diverse economic, social and cultural experiences and Spanish fluency are a plus. Must have driver’s license and access to transportation. Legal Aid Society has thirty-six attorneys in eight offices in Middle and East Tennessee. Its attorneys provide low-income people expert legal assistance at all levels of state and federal court. Its staff includes national authorities in the fields of domestic violence, housing, consumer law, federal income taxation, health advocacy, nonprofit group representation, social security and special education.
