Individuals who are Deaf or Disabled are encouraged to apply.   SALARY RANGE (Depending on Experience): $23.34 - $31.29 hourly    Employment Status: Regular, Non-Exempt, Full-Time, 37.5 hours   LOCATION: Los Angeles, Ontario, Sacramento, San Diego, or Oakland. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this position currently works remotely but is expected to be required to work in the office once onsite operations resume.   WHO WE ARE Disability Rights California (DRC) is a statewide, non-profit legal organization dedicated to advancing the rights of Californians with disabilities.  DRC works to achieve fairness and justice for people with disabilities through individual and impact litigation, state and federal policy and regulatory advocacy, and community education and training.   PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Legal Support 2 serves as the primary secretary to enhance the effectiveness of the legal/advocacy staff by providing legal secretarial and paralegal support and information management support.   JOB RESPONSIBILITIES DRC provides reasonable disability accommodations to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Legal Support 2 essential functions include: Technical –80% ·       Assemble, serve, and file legal documents with State and Federal court and administrative agencies. ·       Coordinate and provide logistical support for complex projects, trainings, and conferences. ·        Maintain calendar, record appearance dates and legal deadlines. ·       Oversee litigation support, including participation in litigation case planning with attorneys and support teams. ·       Make documents accessible for trainings. ·       Prepare documents, correspondence, forms, and charts for cases and litigation. ·       Establish, maintain, and monitor recordkeeping and data/document management systems, including opening and closing cases. ·       Categorize legal and discovery documents. ·       Monitor case flow documentation. ·       Prepare and update legal binders. ·       Perform online legal research for legal advocacy staff. ·       Create and maintain legal templates and forms.   Customer Service –20% ·       Provide mentorship, review, and verify support staff’s work including changes to court rules (federal & state), court filings, and formatting of documents. ·       Communicate with clients, direct telephone calls, and coordinate conference calls. ·       Distribute materials; copy; fax; and process mail.   Legal Support 2 marginal functions ·       Coordinate and make travel arrangements. ·       Provide backup support. ·       Participate in outreach activities to minority and underserved communities. ·       Perform other duties as assigned.   TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Ability to travel infrequently for activities such as training or outreach activities up to 10% of the time.   WORKING CONDITIONS Work is done in a typical office environment, which includes regular sitting, use of a computer, written and verbal communication through a computer. May occasionally require standing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching primarily related to filing and processing paperwork. May occasionally encounter lifting, as exampled by adding paper to a copy machine.  
Requirements: 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus, five years of litigation secretarial experience and/or training; or a Paralegal Certificate, plus two years of litigation secretarial experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.   LICENSES / CERTIFICATES A Paralegal Certificate preferred.   PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS ·       Bilingual – English/Spanish. ·       Experience using Westlaw or other legal research database, and researching local court rules. ·       Experience using Summation Case Management or other litigation support and legal review service platform. ·       Experience working with nonprofit and/or social service agencies. ·       Contacts with, and/or lived experience within, disability organizations and/or within disability communities. ·       Contacts with, and/or lived experience within, multi-ethnic organizations and/or within multi-ethnic communities. ·       Contacts with and/or lived experience within low-income communities. ·       Experience working with and/or sensitivity to persons with disabilities and/or experience working with and/or sensitivity to persons from multi-ethnic communities. ·       Life experience as a person with a disability OR direct experience as a caregiver of a family member with a disability.
