Development and Communications Coordinator

The Appalachian Research and Defense Fund of Kentucky, Inc. (AppalReD Legal Aid) seeks a talented Development and Communications Coordinator to manage program development, fundraising, and external communications. This full-time, exempt position, reporting to the Director of Administration, will involve about 70% development and 30% communications.

AppalReD Legal Aid is a non-profit law firm which provides high quality civil legal assistance to low-income and vulnerable individuals and families in a 37-county area including the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky and rolling hills of south central Kentucky.  AppalReD Legal Aid operates a network of five (5) field offices with a staff of 23 attorneys, 3 paralegals, and supporting personnel.  AppalReD Legal Aid’s offices are located in Prestonsburg, Hazard, Barbourville, Somerset, and Richmond.

Requirements: 

The Development and Communications Coordinator will be a part of AppalReD Legal Aid’s administrative team and will be expected to:

  • Participate in formulating and implementing a development plan.
  • Manage and expand philanthropic fundraising from individuals, law firms, businesses, and charitable foundations.
  • Develop and manage funder relationships, including assisting project staff with grant reports to funders.
  • Engage board and staff in fundraising.
  • Manage the annual fundraising campaign and periodic special fundraising campaigns.
  • Participate in planning and carrying out special fundraising events.
  • Plan and execute strategies for donor cultivation and recognition.
  • Manage fundraising data and software.
  • Assist administrative staff with funding proposals to non-philanthropic (government) funders.
  • Manage program external communications.
  • Assist with writing and coordinating regular communications for donors, staff, and the community.
  • Participate in managing and updating the program website.
  • Participate in developing and implementing social media strategies.

Job requirements include:

  • Commitment to AppalReD Legal Aid’s mission.
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or commensurate experience.
  • Experience in development, public relations, communications, or marketing in a non-profit environment with demonstrated fundraising success preferred.
  • Computer proficiency in MS Office applications and fundraising software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written). 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Organized, able to prioritize work, handle multiple responsibilities and work ahead of deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Familiarity with philanthropic community in eastern and south central Kentucky helpful.

The preference is for the Development and Communications Coordinator to work out of AppalReD Legal Aid’s Prestonsburg office. However, applicants who would prefer to work out of one of AppalReD Legal Aid’s other offices will be considered.
