Benefits/Housing/Elder Law Attorney

Statewide Legal Services of Connecticut (“SLS”) seeks an attorney to provide legal counselling and limited services to low income individuals in matters of public benefits, public housing, and elder-law.  This position involves telephonic legal advocacy, referral and possible outreach duties.  SLS is a member of the larger legal aid community, the Connecticut Network for Legal Aid. (See www.CTLawhelp.org).  Our services give thousands of people each year the tools to understand and to resolve life-impacting cases such as evictions, domestic violence, consumer debt-defense and public benefit denials and appeals.  We also conduct community outreach and education to local service providers and client groups, often in collaboration with other legal aid entities and service organizations.  Recently we have added the impact of climate change to our stated program priorities.    of climate change to our stated program priorities.    SLS is an Equal Opportunity employer. SLS offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, disability, paid leave, and 401(k).  SLS has temporarily closed its physical office space in response to the current pandemic.  The majority of SLS attorneys and staff are working remotely.  We will provide appropriate equipment and IT services to allow connection to our telephone hotline, case management system, and to all our networked capacities. The candidate must have and maintain sufficient bandwidth capacities to allow for working remotely.  SLS is exploring a hybrid workplace model in 2022 – 2023.    

 

Requirements: 
The ideal attorney candidate will have at least 3 years practice in at least one of these areas. In addition, we expect you to have a passion for social justice, and preferably have worked with people of low-income and marginalized populations.  Because of our fast-paced environment, the candidate will already have a basic proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, digital case management or similar systems.  Spanish oral and literacy proficiency is strongly preferred.
