Attorney (Supporting Families Workgroup: 2 Positions)

The Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA) is the frontline law firm for low-income people in Los Angeles and is currently accepting applications for the position of Attorney. LAFLA seeks to achieve equal justice for poor and low-income people in greater Los Angeles. We change lives through direct representation, systems change, and community education.

Requirements: 
QUALIFICATIONS:

· Active membership in the California State Bar;

· Administrative experience in immigration matters before USCIS and EOIR;

· Litigation experience in State or Federal Court and preferably in family law or immigration         proceedings;

· Demonstrated knowledge of domestic violence related family and immigration law preferred;

· Ability to deal with people tactfully and effectively;

· Demonstrated commitment to serving immigrant communities and survivors of domestic violence;

 · Willingness to work beyond a minimum 7.0 hour workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events, and workweeks in excess of 35 hours when caseload or other obligations so necessitate;

· Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

 

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

· Provide direct legal services to victims of torture, domestic violence, and other serious crimes in both family law and immigration matters;

· Develop appropriate outreach materials and disseminate information about rights and benefits available to victims of torture, domestic violence, and other serious crimes;

· Identify significant legal needs and issues for survivors of torture and/or domestic violence in the areas of immigration and family law and develop plans, including litigation and policy to address those needs;

· Outreach to immigrant communities where survivors of torture and/or domestic violence are found;

· Conduct trainings and outreach to community based organizations and community groups;

· Coordinate with other assistance organizations in the area by providing referrals and implementing partner meetings to assure appropriate and efficient coverage of services;

· In conjunction with the Managing Attorney, Supervising Attorney and the Pro Bono Director, recruit, train, and supervise volunteer attorneys and law students; and

· Supervises legal clinic at courthouse one to three times per week.
