Veterans Unit Litigation Attorney
Pine Tree Legal Assistance
Veterans Unit Litigation Attorney
Location: Bangor office; Hybrid remote
An opportunity to serve Maine Veterans!
Pine Tree Legal Assistance is seeking a self-directed and motivated attorney to join the PTLA Veterans Unit. This is an exciting opportunity to have an immediate and profound impact on civil legal needs for veterans throughout the state. This position will be located in PTLA’s Bangor office serving the entire state with a priority service area north of Augusta.
As a general litigator for veterans within the VA Maine Healthcare system, the attorney should expect to appear in court on a regular basis to provide representation on consumer, landlord/tenant, and benefits (including both State and VA health and income benefits) law cases, as well as provide administrative advocacy in a range of different civil needs, including before the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Veterans Affairs. While the typical caseload is handled at the District Court or Superior Court the attorney may handle appeals to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court as well as appeals to the Board of Appeals for Veteran Claims. Depending on experience, the attorney may also handle cases in federal court. Case acceptance decisions are made by each office, consistent with Pine Tree’s approved Statement of Priorities and specific grant requirements, which may change over time.
The attorney in this position will enjoy the opportunity to travel throughout the state, with a priority area north of Augusta. The attorney will perform community engagement with VA clinical and administrative staff and assist them in properly identifying health-harming civil legal needs for referral. In addition, the attorney will also establish new relationships with VA partners in areas across the state that have historically provided fewer referrals to PTLA.
Finally, the Veterans Unit litigation attorney may be involved in recruitment, training, and supervision of law students and undergraduate interns and volunteers in the office, as well as support of pro bono volunteers in the community. Importantly, the attorney will work as a member of the office team and support the work of others in the office.
Applicant must reside in, or be willing to relocate to, the state of Maine. This is an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Compensation and Benefits
