Supervising Litigation Attorney (TJP) Remote

Other: FLSA Exempt, Full-Time (37.5hrs/week), Non-Union Position

 

Position Description:

Reporting to the Legal Director, the Litigation Attorney will provide comprehensive legal services to eligible clients in CRLA priority areas in accordance with CRLA program guidelines, the ABA Standards for Providers of Civil Legal Services, and the Code of Professional Responsibility. Funding for this position is through 12/27/2024, with the expectation that continued funding will be awarded.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Represents low-income clients in unlawful detainer actions and other housing cases in the Helplines in five (5) counties (Ventura, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Stanislaus, San Joaquin, Yuba, Sutter, and Colusa).
  • Manages own caseload from receipt of a case to resolution, including bench and jury trials in the TJPs five counties. 
  • Works with and supervises legal staff handling unlawful detainer cases and other landlord-tenant matters.
  • Keeps up-to-date on Federal, State, and local laws and legal requirements relating to the eviction process, fair housing, and access to justice.
  • Oversees litigation skills training and onboarding for staff attorneys.
  • Assists Community Workers and other staff in the development of community education regarding housing legal rights.
  • Collaborates with Directing Attorneys from Oxnard, SLO, Santa Maria, Modesto, Marysville, and Stockton on UD cases and access to court issues in their respective service areas.
  • Collaborates with Directing Attorney in the supervision of program staff and development of program priorities
  • Participates in CRLA training programs, local office case reviews, the Housing Task Force, staff meetings, and other CRLA activities as required.
  • Works with members of the private bar or law students as necessary in accordance with CRLA Private Bar Involvement.
  • Participates in supervising Tenant Justice Project hotline (GloCOM) shifts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS & QUALITIES of our ideal candidate: We intend to bring a candidate with as many of the following qualifications and qualities as possible:

Required Education and Experience

  • Strong preference for those admitted to practice law in the State of California.
  • Preferred three (3) years of trial experience, preferably in the area of landlord/tenant litigation and preferably in California state courts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income clients.
  • Strong legal research and writing skills.
  • Experience supervising attorney and non-attorney staff.

Preferred Education and Experience:

A highly qualified and desirable candidate would also have the following:

  • Experience in a non-profit legal services environment.
  • Additional relevant language abilities
  • Ability to manage a large volume of cases.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work with tenant advocacy groups and other third parties, including court personnel
  • Ability to mentor junior attorneys
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) ability

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

We offer a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries; the estimated starting annual salary range for this position is: $88,000 - 132,0000 (placement in range is primarily determined by years of related experience). Generous benefits package which includes 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependents coverage; and 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution effective immediately. Some professional dues are paid by CRLA (Bar Fees) and, if qualified, up to $6,000 law school Loan Reimbursement Assistance Program (LRAP). Generous paid leave policy which includes;  15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays each year, and vacation (accrue 15 days for the first year of service and 20 days after one year of service at CRLA).
