Supervising Attorney (Coordinated Attorney Team)

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) is seeking a Supervising Attorney to lead its Coordinated Attorney Team. The Supervising Attorney is expected to work as part of a team overseeing and leading the case and impact work of a diverse group of lawyers.  The Coordinated Attorney Team is made up of 10+ attorneys who practice in a wide range of poverty law areas.  The Supervising Attorney is also expected to maintain expertise on a range of housing related matters, included local rent stabilization ordinances, relevant housing policy issues, subsidized housing, and other eviction related matters.

Compensation:

Salary $85,000.00 - Commensurate with experience.  Excellent Benefits which include: choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.

 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Supervising Attorney will function as a team to supervise a group of diverse attorneys providing assistance in immigration, housing, public benefits, consumer, housing and family law.  This includes but is not limited to delivery of unlawful detainer (eviction) services, including the preparation of answers to complaints, legal information, referrals, and representation at trial.  Prepare staff work plans/performance evaluations with final edits/approval by senior management team.  Assist with managing grant(s) including tracking progress towards grant deliverables, drafting reports, oversee data collection/analysis. The Supervising Attorney will also be expected to mentor team members, hold regular check in meetings with members, establish systems to organize the team’s work-flow, facilitate weekly case review discussions and provide substantive legal supervision over the team’s housing cases.  He/She will work closely with housing advocates and managers throughout the program to identify systematic issues arising out of the work for broader policy advocacy and/or affirmative litigation.  Frequent travel throughout southern California is required.  

 

 

Qualifications:

Must be an attorney licensed to practice law in California with a minimum of five years’ experience in at least one of the following practice areas: immigration law, public benefits, family law, consumer or housing. Must have experience or the ability to supervisor and mentor a team of attorneys. The candidate must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior experience serving low-income individuals and client groups, with a sensitivity to those in crisis including survivors of domestic violence. should possess strong research and organizational skills; the ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; the ability to oversee multiple projects; and well-developed analytical skills.  Experience handling administrative hearings, court hearings and trials is preferred. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.
