Statewide Pro Bono Program Coordinator for Volunteer Attorney Program

Description: 

New Mexico Legal Aid is seeking a dynamic and creative leader to serve as Statewide Pro Bono Coordinator for NMLA’s Volunteer Attorney Program. This position will work closely with the State Bar of New Mexico and the New Mexico Commission on Access to Justice, and with local courts and pro bono committees throughout the state.

NMLA is committed to building one of the most successful and innovative pro bono projects in the country.  The Statewide Pro Bono Coordinator will work closely with the Volunteer Attorney Program Director, and with State Bar leaders, Courts, local Judicial District pro bono committees, individual private attorneys and law firms, law school faculty and student groups, and civil legal services partner agencies throughout the state to help pro bono initiatives reach their maximum potential for providing representation and other forms of legal assistance to low-income New Mexicans.

 

If you become the new Volunteer Attorney Program Statewide Pro Bono Coordinator, you will play a key role in leading efforts to:

a.       Expand the number of pro bono attorneys willing to provide a full range of pro bono services, including direct services to low-income clients throughout New Mexico’s 13 Judicial Districts, plus activities that identify and offer trainings and CLEs designed to increase the types and complexity of cases pro bono attorneys agree to accept;

b.      Organize and recruit volunteer attorneys for quarterly “Law-la-palooza” legal clinic events in the 2nd Judicial District in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, and similar pro bono legal clinic events in other New Mexico Judicial Districts; and

c.       Lead statewide efforts to increase placement of pro bono cases , especially in key areas such as family law, housing and consumer law.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are passionate and strongly committed to helping NMLA and our statewide pro bono partners better serve our client community. 

Requirements: 

Three or more years’ experience as a practicing attorney. Licensed in New Mexico or licensed in any other state and eligible for New Mexico legal aid providers limited licensing or for admission by reciprocity. Prior experience working with pro bono programs or handling pro bono cases is a plus. Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, and enthusiasm for building collaborative relationships within the State Bar and the statewide pro bono community. Must be willing to travel. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
