STAFF ATTORNEYS STATEWIDE ADVOCACY SUPPORT UNIT Temporary Full-Time The Statewide Advocacy Support Unit announces an immediate opening for two full-time, temporary staff attorneys for qualified applicants within the Foreclosure Legal Assistance Project.

Responsibilities: Provide legal information, advice, counseling, representation in administrative mediation hearings, as well as in civil litigation, to low-income Maryland homeowners and tenants facing mortgage default, foreclosure, or eviction from a foreclosed property. Litigation may involves both state and federal court including bankruptcy court proceedings in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. Some community outreach and education will also be required. This position is located in Baltimore City. Travel is required.

Duties and Responsibilities: a) Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals, as appropriate. b) Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients. c) Conduct factual investigation, analysis, and legal research. d) Advise clients of results of investigation and research and counsel clients about their options. e) Prepare legal documents, including but not limited to, correspondence, complaints, answers, other pleadings, motions, discovery, discovery responses, memoranda of law, briefs and other documents required for appeals, and bankruptcies. f) Develop case theory and strategy for the representation of clients. g) Prepare cases, manage files and represent clients in negotiation, hearings, trials and appeals. Work with various community groups and accept speaking engagements as assigned by supervisor. h) Continue professional development and education through attendance at Maryland Legal Aid-sponsored training and other programs. i) Perform other duties, as assigned within the scope of the essential functions of the position.

 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland, or admitted in another jurisdiction or graduate of an ABA approved law school and eligible for admission in the State of Maryland and willing to take the first available Maryland Bar examination following date of employment. Prior experience involving foreclosure defense, mortgage compliance, predatory lending, bankruptcy or related litigation is highly desirable. Ability to effectively manage a challenging caseload is a plus. Must be highly organized and attentive to detail. Familiarity with case management software, timekeeping, and Office 365.
