Staff Attorney – Legal Hand Call- In Center
The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking an experienced attorney to provide support and assistance in the provision of services to community members in Albany and Schenectady Counties through the operation of a Legal Hand Call- In Center. Working in partnership with the Center for Community Justice, the attorney will support the operation of a virtual Call-In Center serving Schenectady & Albany Counties where trained community volunteers, who are not lawyers, provide free legal information, assistance, and referrals to help people resolve issues that affect their lives, in areas like employment, housing, family, immigration, domestic violence, and benefits, and prevent problems from turning into legal cases. All are welcomed and treated with respect. There are no eligibility requirements, and all are assisted regardless of income or immigration status. Appointments are not necessary, and the Center maintains some evenings and weekend hours. We seek an attorney who will be dedicated to our mission and will work to enable community member volunteers to assist other community members to access information, resolve issues, and receive effective referrals including referrals to legal services when appropriate. The office for this position is in Albany, New York, the state capital. Albany is a lively, family friendly place to live with a reasonable cost of living, excellent quality of life, and easy access to major metropolitan areas as well as year-round outdoor opportunities. Responsibilities: The Legal Hand Center Attorney, with the Center of Community Justice Center Manager, is responsible for the operation of the Legal Hand Call-In Center, compliance with the Legal Hand policies and procedures and local laws, training, outreach, and where appropriate, directing Volunteer referrals to legal services. The attorney will coordinate with Center Manager to supervise and manage approximately 25-30 community Volunteers, implement ongoing Volunteer training opportunities, assist Volunteers with interactions with Visitors and help create a warm and welcoming environment for community Volunteers and Visitors. The Center Attorney does not provide legal advice or legal advice but will maintain and update, in coordination with other legal services providers, accurate information in the Legal Hand Helper database, provide comprehensive information to Volunteers and Visitors on general legal issue, make, or direct Volunteers to make, where appropriate, referrals to legal service providers and other non-profit organizations, and develop and maintain partnerships with legal services providers and community-based organizations for Know Your Rights workshops or Volunteer in service trainings. The Center Attorney will also conduct outreach events help manage the Center including some evening and weekend hours. The attorney will participate in the development and implementation of LASNNY’s race equity priority and their own professional development plan. The attorney will also be expected to conduct recordkeeping and reporting as required and work collaboratively with other LASNNY staff to ensure efficient and effective referrals to LASNNY and other legal services providers.



Salary Range: DOE up to $62,921 We are a unionized program and our fringe benefits are excellent.

 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: Admission to New York State Bar. Four to eight years’ experience, preferably in civil legal services. Applicants must have a demonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with low-income communities and communities of color to advance equity and experience working with diverse communities. Excellent writing, communication, time management and presentation skills. Experience with supervision, public speaking, and developing training curriculums. Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary setting and maintain strong relationships with multiple organizations in the community. Enthusiasm to teach and make legal information accessible to people facing legal issues, community volunteers and advocates and for partnering with community-based advocates and organizations. Must be intelligent, hardworking, careful, reliable, have good judgment, attention to detail Must be able to communicate effectively with clients and staff, work independently and efficiently and be able to problem solve and work collaboratively with community partner agency staff. Demonstrated strong listening and relationship building skills, experience, creativity. Must be willing to travel throughout the service area and have a car and a clean valid New York driver’s license. Strong computer, administrative, reporting and data entry skills required. Ability to speak Spanish a plus. The position is full time, some evening and weekend hours required. The Call-In Center operates virtually. Work will be mostly conducted remotely. In person outreach, training and interactions with Volunteers and community partner staff will be required.
