Staff Attorney (Immigration Unit)

Description: 

New Haven Legal Assistance Association, Inc. (NHLAA) seeks to hire two attorneys. NHLAA seeks attorneys with a deep commitment to public interest and experience in immigration law. These attorneys will represent clients in removal and bond proceedings before Hartford Immigration Court, the Board of Immigration Appeals and related proceedings before the USCIS, and, when appropriate, on family matters in the Connecticut Superior Court. NHLAA is a nonprofit organization that was incorporated in 1964. Our mission is to provide high-quality free legal services to individuals, families, and groups living in the greater New Haven area, including the lower Naugatuck Valley, who are unable to obtain legal services because of limited income, age, disability, discrimination and other barriers. We specialize in family, workers rights, education, public benefits, housing, immigration, health, and child law.

Requirements: 

The attorney will be expected to: • Represent noncitizens in removal proceedings in immigration court, before the Board of Immigration Appeals and in Probate Court proceedings • Represent non-detained clients released on bond • Provide individualized consultations to detained noncitizens at detention centers in Massachusetts. Travel may be required in the early morning, evenings, and weekends • Work with outside pro bono counsel on assigned cases • Engage in affirmative litigation • Provide individualized advocacy and assistance to immigrants with complex cases due to criminal records and other issues • Conduct know-your-rights and other informational workshops to educate immigrant communities and social service providers about immigration issues affecting their lives • Engage in strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, research and action support • Provide mentorship and supervision to BIA accredited representatives, law student interns, and legal fellows Qualifications: • Applicants must be admitted to a state Bar, with a willingness to seek Connecticut admission as soon as possible. • Immigration law experience is required; preference for attorneys with removal defense experience • Experience representing clients in removal defense experience including law school clinics and internships • Demonstrated commitment to representing low-income, disadvantaged clients • Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills • Interest in developing new approaches to representing detained noncitizens • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team and with outside assigned counsel. • Ability to manage a high volume of cases • Spanish speaking ability is strongly preferred, but not required.
