Staff Attorney (Housing Stability)

Description: 

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks Staff Attorneys to serve eligible clients threatened with loss of their housing.  Attorney positions may be based out of any one of NMLA’s statewide offices, and are part of a statewide project by the State of New Mexico funded with Emergency Rent Assistance funds to promote housing stability in the wake of the pandemic.

 

The Staff Attorneys will handle issues for eligible clients such as eviction prevention, eviction diversion, habitability, reasonable accommodations, subsidized housing, Low Income Housing Tax Credit housing, and other housing related work.  The clients will be from all over New Mexico and there will be an emphasis on rural areas. The work will include advising clients and helping them prepare paperwork; representing clients in court and in administrative proceedings; conducting community education and outreach to eligible clients and community organizations; and recruiting and collaborating with pro bono attorneys. The Staff Attorneys will be active in local bar and community activities.

 

NMLA handles a wide range of creative, challenging and complex work. We are looking for highly motivated candidates who are passionate about and strongly committed to helping NMLA better serve our client communities, including development of effective team strategies to handle complex advocacy and extended representation cases.   

 

Requirements: 

Requirements: Two years’ experience as a licensed attorney preferred. Admission to practice in New Mexico required. Must be willing and able to travel. Must be able to effectively use computer technology and remote communications systems, including shared on-line workspaces and web meeting and videoconferencing software, to effectively collaborate and co-counsel with staff located in multiple offices. Familiarity with Office365 is a plus. Candidates also must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. Preferences may be made for individuals willing to work out of NMLA’s rural offices (Clovis, Gallup, Hobbs, Roswell, Las Vegas, Silver City, Taos). Proficiency in Spanish or tribal languages spoken in New Mexico is a plus.
