LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK STAFF ATTORNEY – HOUSING ATTORNEY – CANTON, NY OFFICE

Staff Attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York in Canton, New York. Responsibilities: Assertive and compassionate attorney is needed to provide high quality, culturally competent civil legal services in housing and mortgage foreclosure cases, as well as other cases involving essential legal needs of low-income clients, in the Canton, New York Legal Aid office. The attorney will be responsible for providing representation in court and administrative proceedings; legal advice and brief services to clients; client legal education, and in-service training to human service providers on legal issues; active participation in the St. Lawrence County Task Force and Points North Continuum of Care; and case reporting and outcome reporting to grant funders. 

Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income and needy individuals. This position is in our branch office in Canton, New York.

Salary: $46,307 up to $59,700 Unionized program, with excellent fringe benefits. May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: At least 1 - 7 years prior legal experience or equivalent is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Sensitive and effective management of a robust litigation caseload. Must be assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently. Must work well independently. Must have a car and valid New York driver’s license. Excellent computer, research and writing skills. Prior experience in high quality representation of low-income clients or relevant experience. Must be willing to make a two year commitment to the Legal Aid Society.
