Staff Attorney (full time) (union)
The Wage Justice Center (“WJC”) seeks a full-time Staff Attorney with at least three years of experience. Work is currently remote, with some in-person meetings and court appearances. WJC is dedicated to combating wage theft and using legal strategies to help low-income workers get paid. For over fifteen years, WJC has pursued this mission through various legal services and programs including: a direct services legal program for day laborers; litigation against employers who have failed to pay workers and sought to evade judgments for unpaid wages; legal-rights workshops for community groups and workers; training and technical support for other non-profits.
Responsibilities
The Staff Attorney’s responsibilities include, among others:
• Conducting all aspects of civil litigation, including discovery and motion practice
• Performing legal research and drafting of briefs, pleadings, and legal memoranda
• Investigating potential cases for affirmative litigation
• Providing legal advice and counsel to WJC clients
• Conducting trainings, community outreach and education to individuals, local community-based organizations and worker advocates
• Mentoring junior attorneys and legal staff depending on qualifications and program needs
Qualifications
• Admitted to practice law in California and in good standing with the California State Bar
• Minimum of 3 years of experience practicing law
• Ability to independently carry-on civil litigation, including discovery and motion practice
• Strong interpersonal, oral and written advocacy skills with the ability to work and communicate with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse, multicultural community
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with attorneys and non-attorneys
• Ability to multi-task and manage a high volume of cases
• Ability to coordinate and collaborate successfully with other groups and organizations;
• Attention to detail
• Interest in contributing to the development of the organization’s mission and services
• Demonstrated commitment to workers’ rights, social, and economic justice, and their intersections
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Favorable consideration will be given to applicants who have familiarity with employment law, creditor/debtor law and/or bankruptcy law.
• Spanish language proficiency preferred
Salary
This is a full-time exempt union position that includes a generous benefits package. The salary range is $65,000 - $95,000 per year depending on experience.
