Staff Attorney (Economic Development Unit)
The Community Economic Development Unit of Legal Aid of Western Missouri is seeking a full-time attorney in one of its satellite offices in Kansas City, Missouri. The attorney will work with inner-city neighborhood associations and local non-profit community development corporations on targeted inner-city community improvement initiatives. This position will focus heavily on real estate transactions and civil land-use litigation with the target outcome being blight remediation, affordable housing preservation and community re-investment.
Legal Aid of Western Missouri is a nonprofit firm providing civil legal services to low income persons. It offers a professional and friendly work environment with integrity as its guiding principle. As with all job openings at Legal Aid, second language proficiency in a language commonly spoken by Legal Aid’s clients or potential clients, particularly Spanish, but also Arabic, Vietnamese, Somali or Dinka will be viewed favorably in the hiring decision. The ability to speak in a second language, however, is not a requirement for this job.
Salary: $48,204 + DOE.

Candidates must have the following: a Missouri law license (or the ability to obtain a Missouri license soon after hire), sensitivity to diverse communities, ability to work independently, excellent judgment, strong reasoning and writing abilities, good organizational habits, highly motivated, and the ability to learn quickly. Preferred credentials include: strong academic achievements (including moot court, law review, law journal, or practical clinical experience), litigation experience, background in community development, and commitment to public interest law.
