Staff Attorney (Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault and Family Law)

LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK STAFF ATTORNEY – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/SEXUAL ASSAULT AND FAMILY LAW – ALBANY, NY OFFICE

Responsibilities: Assertive and compassionate attorney is needed to provide high quality, culturally competent civil legal services to victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault and to low income people in our Albany, New York office located at 95 Central Avenue, Albany, New York. The attorney will be responsible for providing advice, brief service, community legal education and zealous representation of victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault and other family law clients in a broad range of civil legal matters including orders of protection, custody, matrimonial law and child support, as well as general legal services to low income residents in Albany surrounding counties in LASNNY’s service area as needed. The attorney will be expected to work closely with local domestic violence service providers and actively participate in domestic violence, human trafficking, and LGBTQ domestic violence task forces as well as outreach events on behalf of LASNNY.


Program Profile: The Legal Aid Society is a publicly funded law firm which provides free civil legal services to low-income individuals. This position is in our Albany office. This position primarily serves Albany County and, as needed, surrounding counties within LASNNY’s service area.

Salary: $46,307 to $59,700 Unionized program with excellent fringe benefits. May be eligible for Loan Repayment Assistance Program.
 

Requirements: 

Qualifications: At least 1 – 7 years prior legal experience, or equivalent, is required. Admitted to New York State Bar. Demonstrated commitment to public interest law and providing high quality legal services to clients in civil matters. Effective management of a robust litigation caseload involving sensitive and traumatic circumstances. Must be assertive, compassionate, demonstrate good judgment, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to communicate effectively and work efficiently. Must work well independently. Must have a car and valid New York driver’s license. Excellent computer, research and writing skills. Prior experience in high quality representation of Family Law clients and/or victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault in Family/Supreme Court or relevant experience. Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
