Staff Attorney (Disaster Recovery) (partially remote)

Description: 

Gulfcoast Legal Services, a nonprofit civil legal aid provider, is soliciting applications for a full-time staff attorney to join our Venice office. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Housing Unit Deputy Director, providing comprehensive legal services to Hurricane Ian survivors.  Hybrid remote work opportunities are available after successful completion of a 90-day probationary period.  This position is temporarily funded and is set to end on November 15th, 2023.

The staff attorney position involves a high degree of professionalism, advocacy, compassion, independence, and personal initiative.  Our attorneys provide a full range of high-quality legal services to individual clients, including full representation in court.  They participate in outreach events and educational presentation for community groups.

Demonstrated Abilities

  • Ability to work on various community projects with different partnering agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and with attention to detail on all case matters.
  • Ability to deal professionally, courteously, and efficiently with people and clients in crisis.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality and work independently providing representation to clients in civil law matters.

Education/Experience Requirements

  • A commitment to the provision of high-quality legal services.
  • Juris Doctorate degree from ABA-accredited law school.
  • Florida Bar membership and eligibility to practice law in the State of Florida.
  • Prior experience as an attorney a plus, with a preference for public interest law and/or volunteer legal aid experience. Law school clinical experience and/or internship will be considered.
