Consumer Law Program   Hybrid in-person / remote work option available.
  Salary & Benefits Information:
Salary The salary range for this position is $60,000-90,000. Specific salary offered will be based on the candidate’s experience and skills.

  Job Summary:
Legal Services of Eastern Missouri, Inc. seeks a full-time Staff Attorney for the Consumer Law Program. The Consumer Program’s litigation work focuses on consumer issues, including:
  • Consumer fraud, deception, and abuse cases;
  • Consumer debt-defense litigation and counterclaims;
  • Tenant’s rights litigation, such as tenant litigation against abusive and neglectful landlords and tenant eviction defense;
  • Preventing or reversing improper executions on judgments.
The Staff Attorney will represent clients in state (and possibly federal) civil court proceedings. In other cases, the Staff Attorney will provide client counseling and relatively brief legal services such as:
  • Assisting clients with credit reports or identity theft
  • Managing client problems with student loan debt and debt collector harassment;
  • Investigating potentially fraudulent, unfair, or deceptive acts and practices of business such as auto dealers, lenders, and landlords.
All Staff Attorneys in the Consumer Program are encouraged to identify and participate in systemic advocacy using impact litigation in state and federal courts. We also encourage and practice community lawyering, education, and outreach.   Responsibilities:
  • Conducting client interviews, investigation, and fact gathering
  • All aspects of litigation, including, drafting pleadings, discovery, motion practice, trial preparation and trials
  • Conducting legal research and analysis
  • Participating in community outreach and presentations
  • Working collaboratively with other Legal Services programs and community partners
  • Supervising law student interns

Requirements: 
Qualifications:
  • JD and admitted to practice in Missouri (or eligible to be admitted)
  • Strong communication skills, work ethic, flexibility and teamwork
  • Ability to work with low-income clients
  • Willingness to collaborate with community stakeholders
  • Strong advocacy skills
  • Strong organizational and case-management skills
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new technology to improve client services
