NMLA Staff Attorney position available to serve Taos and the surrounding communities

New Mexico Legal Aid seeks a staff attorney who will be responsible for serving eligible clients in Taos and the surrounding communities. Some statewide legal services will be included. The attorney will handle a variety of cases, potentially including domestic violence, homelessness prevention, consumer issues, public benefits, family law, housing, and other areas of poverty law practice. The successful candidate will be active in local bar and community activities and will participate in community education and outreach to eligible clients. NMLA is working towards building our Medical Legal Partnership Program and the successful candidate may be asked to assist in this project within the Town of Taos and surrounding communities. The successful candidate will also collaborate closely with staff in other NMLA offices. The work will primarily be in Northern New Mexico centered around our office in Taos, but may include casework and outreach throughout New Mexico.  Given the current guidelines regarding Covid-19, NMLA is compliant and makes allowances for remote work.

 

We seek highly motivated candidates who are passionate and strongly committed to helping New Mexico Legal Aid better serve our client community, including development of effective team strategies to handle complex advocacy and extended representation cases.

 

Requirements: 

Requirements: Candidates must be licensed in New Mexico, licensed in another state and eligible for reciprocity, or eligible for New Mexico legal aid providers limited licensing. Experience as practicing attorney preferred. Candidates must possess excellent written and oral communication skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks, manage a significant caseload and build collaborative relationships within the staff and the community. Must be willing to travel. Proficiency in Spanish is a plus.
