Alaska Legal Services Corporation has an opening for a full-time staff attorney in our Nome office. The attorney will provide direct legal services to low-income clients in a variety of civil legal matters. In addition, the Nome staff attorney maintains a medical-legal partnership (MLP) with Norton Sound Health Corporation (NSHC), the local tribally-operated health care organization. The attorney will offer trainings on legal issues for medical providers and comprehensive legal assistance to low-income patients at NSHC. By focusing on cases that promote income growth, housing stability, and personal safety, the MLP uses legal advocacy as a tool to address social determinants of health. Practice areas include housing, domestic violence, wills and probates, public benefits, consumer law, Native law, and ICWA.
Duties include intake and casework; working with community groups, tribes, and medical providers; and providing community legal education and travel to outlying areas. The attorney is expected to spend approximately half of his/her time at NSHC, seeing MLP clients and communicating with MLP partners. Background working in cross-cultural situations desired. Entry-level applicants are invited to apply.
Applicants must be either admitted to practice law in Alaska or admitted to practice in another state and eligible for an Alaska Bar Rule 43 waiver.
