Staff Attorney
Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) seeks a full-time attorney to provide civil legal services to the low-income residents of the North Slope Borough.
The position is located in Utqiaġvik, the northernmost community in the U.S. and has a population of about 5,000. More than half of the Borough population is Iñupiat. Subsistence hunting, fishing, and whaling are important to the culture and economy. Despite its remoteness, Utqiaġvik’s amenities include high-speed internet, a variety of dining options, and cultural opportunities.
The attorney will handle direct service cases (involving, primarily, Native law, family law, and estate issues), impact litigation, and engage in outreach. The attorney will travel in small planes to communities without standard accommodations. The position requires excellent written and verbal advocacy skills, and the ability to both work independently and collaborate with others. A successful applicant will have a commitment to serving low-income communities and the ability to communicate effectively cross-culturally.
Must be admitted to practice law in Alaska or eligible for an Alaska Rule 43 waiver (see http://www.alaskabar.org).
