Staff Attorney

Description: 

The Legal Aid Society of Columbus (LASC) is looking for an individual with a demonstrated commitment to making a difference in the lives of indigent people and their communities for an attorney position in our Columbus office. This attorney will be working exclusively on education law issues involving children and youth and will be a member of the Public Benefits team. Our attorneys are encouraged and supported in being creative, effective advocates in federal, state, and local judicial, administrative, and legislative forums. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Individual client representation in regular education discipline cases including appeals to School Boards and the Court of Common Pleas;

• Individual client representation of students with educational disabilities who are being proposed for removal from school and/or whose Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) need revised;

• Community Outreach;

• Development of partnerships with targeted community groups to advance use of trauma informed care practices and restorative justice in selected urban school; • Strategic advocacy to reduce racial disparities in school discipline practices;

• Coordinate development of training protocol for school staff;

• Perform other duties as assigned by Managing Attorney.

 

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS
• Licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio;
• Experience in legal services or education law (highly desired);
• Working knowledge of education laws, trauma informed care, and restorative justice practices (highly desired);
• Demonstrated patience, compassion, respect and commitment to serving low-income and immigrant community members required;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills required;
• Superior interpersonal skills in order to establish and maintain working relationships with parents and children/youth; • Ability to facilitate collaboration as well as the ability to build and sustain productive relationships with diverse individuals, groups and organizations;
• Demonstrated project development and management skills;
• Exceptional problem solving, planning and organizational skills.
