Staff Attorney

Title:                           Staff Attorney (Bilingual skills preferred)

Supervisor:                   Supervising Attorney

Salary Range:               DOE

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  •   Provide direct fair housing counseling services to tenants and homeowners in protected classes, including providing information on coverage of fair housing laws, making reasonable accommodation requests, providing advocacy, intervention and/or mediation services, and acting as representative in administrative complaints; provide limited fair housing counseling services to housing providers
  •   In collaboration with other senior staff, evaluate test methodology, provide feedback on structuring complaint and audit-based tests, analyze completed rental and lending tests, and prepare administrative complaints for filing
  •   Assist Supervising Attorney with lawsuits and/or collaborate with counsel of record to support agency lawsuits
  •   Lead fair housing training sessions for housing providers; present fair housing information to social service providers, advocacy organizations, and/or community members
  •   Attend community and advocacy organization meetings, municipal/local government hearings and/or meetings, public housing authority meetings, and other relevant outreach events as agency representative as appropriate; prepare formal written comments on any relevant documents or topics
  •   In collaboration with other senior/management staff members, implement programs designed to meet various grant goals and compile data for quarterly reports; contribute to drafting new grant proposals
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must have J.D. and be an active member of the California bar.  Experience in social service or public entity and on behalf of civil rights protections desirable. Candidates must have a desire to work and interact with, as well as demonstrate respect for individuals and groups without regard to race, religion, sex, color, national origin, age, sexual orientation, familial status, or disability. Spanish speaking and writing skills preferred.

 

This position requires the use of a car and some infrequent non-traditional work hours for enforcement activities.

 

Requirements: 

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Commitment to fair housing and civil rights; knowledge of federal and state fair housing laws desirable
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Excellent public speaking, and interpersonal skills in English; Spanish skills strongly preferred
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse community
  • Ability to exhibit patience, tact and respect when dealing with the general public and other staff members
  • Ability to access, read, and interpret legal documents, federal and state fair housing statutes and regulations
  • Ability to conduct training for fair housing professionals, government agencies, and industry groups
  • Ability to represent FHANC effectively in a professional and exceptional manner
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Salesforce, PowerPoint, and other software desirable
