Staff Attorney 1 Salary Range (DOE): $57,585 - $77,169

Staff Attorney 2 Salary Range (DOE): $69,534 - $93,182

WHO WE ARE

DRC’s Healthcare/Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Practice Group ensures access to health care services and a full range of community-based long-term services and supports to enable people with disabilities to live in the community and avoid institutionalization.  Areas of particular focus include Olmstead (community-integration) litigation and advocacy, Medi-Cal home and community-based services waivers, In-Home Supportive Services, and access to essential health care benefits through Medi-Cal managed care, EPSDT, California Children’s Services (CCS), and other specialized programs.

Purpose of the job

Staff Attorney 1: The Staff Attorney 1 will share responsibility with other legal and advocacy staff for providing information, technical assistance, outreach and training and representation in administrative and judicial proceedings to clients with disabilities related to the above priority areas. The Staff Attorney works under the direct supervision of the Healthcare/Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Practice Group Managing Attorney or Senior Attorney and in collaboration with other Disability Rights California attorneys and advocates in their legal, advocacy, and outreach efforts.

Staff Attorney 2: The Staff Attorney 2 in the Healthcare/HCBS Practice Group shares responsibility with other legal and advocacy staff for representing clients with disabilities in administrative and judicial; and providing legal advice, technical assistance, outreach and training. The Staff Attorney 2 works under the direct supervision of the Managing Attorney and in collaboration with other DRC attorneys and advocates in their legal, advocacy, and outreach efforts. The Staff Attorney 2 has expertise in one or more substantive healthcare and/or home and community-based services areas (including IHSS).  While this position is physically located in Los Angeles or Sacramento, the Staff Attorney 2 works with colleagues statewide.

Requirements: 

Staff Attorney 1

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree (JD) plus 1-2 years’ experience
  • Ability to research and analyze legal authority.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions.
  • The ability to work independently with appropriate supervision.

Staff Attorney 2

Education and Experience

  • Juris Doctor degree (JD) plus 3 or more years related experience and/or training;
  • Demonstrated ability to represent clients in administrative and/or judicial proceedings and to take a leadership role in case planning.
  • Ability to conduct factual and legal research and analyze pertinent legal authority.
  • Ability to write succinctly and persuasively.
