Special Projects Supervising Attorney

Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1958 for the purpose of providing civil legal services to low income individuals and seniors. It has two offices in Orange County and two offices in Southeast Los Angeles County, where it is known as Community Legal Services (CLS). LASOC/CLS seeks an energetic, motivated, personable and effective Staff to be housed in LASOC’s Santa Ana office.

Under the supervision of the Directing Attorney, this position is responsible for providing immigration and family services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other victims of violence.  The services with include legal representation, consultation, advocacy, information, education, referrals, and advice and counsel. The attorney will provide, in-depth legal representation in the areas of dissolutions of marriage, paternity, child support, child custody permanent restraining orders and immigration relief for victims of crime.  The attorney will coordinate the program and maintain an individual caseload and will refer cases that fall outside of family law and immigration to other specialized units within LASOC. 

Must have at least 5 years of family law experience and significant experience providing trauma informed services to victims of domestic violence.

Requirements: 


Key Functions

  • Handles client interviews, negotiation, settlement, trial and appeal of cases in State and Federal Courts;
  • Researches and prepares pleadings and other legal documents in connection with trials, hearings, and other legal proceedings;
  • Directs and supervises clinical law students and paralegals;
  • Complies with reporting requirements of relevant grants, including tracking deliverables;
  • Conducts community meetings and attends outreach events; and,
  • Participates in activities of community-based organizations and Bar Association activities.
  • Identify significant legal needs and issues for survivors of domestic violence in the areas of immigration and family law and develop plans, including litigation and policy to address those needs.
  • Identify wrap around legal services and work collaboratively with LASOC-CLS various legal units.
  • Implement trauma-informed delivery of legal services

 

What are we looking for

  • Education/License Required: J.D. and active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.
  • Knowledge of legal principles and their application.
  • Knowledge of rules of evidence and the conduct of court proceedings.
  • Knowledge of legal research methods.
  • Proficiency in Form Builder, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, etc.) and other software programs.
  • Preference will be given to candidates that have some immigration experience.
