Self-Help Legal Access Center Attorney

Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates that provides life changing legal services to address the critical issues that significantly impact the poor. NLSLA’s work includes litigation, training, policy advocacy, technical assistance, and community education.

NLSLA is currently seeking an Attorney to work in the Antelope Valley Self-Help Legal Access Center.   The attorney is responsible for working with NLSLA staff and volunteers to operate a self-help legal access center for Los Angeles County located at the Antelope Valley Courthouse.  The Staff Attorney will help to lead the site staff in assisting and educating self-represented litigants with a variety of civil matters, including family and housing issues. The attorney will also prepare and share educational materials and information with the public in order to facilitate access to justice.

Salary $60,000 + - Commensurate with experience. Excellent Benefits which include: choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 

Work collaboratively with judiciary, court staff and partner agencies to improve pro per access to the court.  Review court pleadings and conduct legal research, assist in conducting family, consumer, housing or workshops for individuals. Train and supervise students and other volunteers working at the center.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

 

Highly motivated attorney passionate about public service work with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in civil litigation, preferably in landlord/tenant, consumer or family law.  Excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, community organizations, attorneys, the judiciary and the public.  Ability to work effectively with staff and volunteers.  Availability to work core hours from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Current membership in the California Bar and bilingual skills in the Spanish language required.

NLSLA is one of Los Angeles County's leading public interest law offices and has been the primary legal aid program serving the cities of Burbank and Glendale and the San Fernando and Antelope Valleys for more than 55 years and the city of Pasadena and San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys since 2001. The NLSLA staff of 135+, including 55 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice.  The NLSLA headquarters is located in Glendale, CA with branch offices in Pacoima, El Monte and Boyle Heights.
