Resource Development Director

Report to: Executive Director

Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area seeks a resource development professional who is an excellent communicator, highly organized, able to lead, who is a team player, strategic thinker, and self-starter to help support our dynamic public interest law firm continue to advance and protect the rights of communities of color, immigrants, and low-income people. The Resource Development Director must be familiar with CRM systems and have excellent project management, interpersonal and problem solving skills.
The Director must enjoy developing relationships with funders, stewarding fund development internally and externally, supporting staff and the Executive Director in a manner that contributes to individual and organizational success.

General Summary of Work Performed
Reporting to and in partnership with the Executive Director, the Development Director leads LCCR’s fundraising efforts. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director and administrative team to implement a comprehensive fund development strategy to advance our mission for justice and equality.

The Development Director is responsible for achieving fund development goals. This includes cultivating law firm, private foundation, individual, and corporate donors; and developing innovative grant fundraising strategies that support the organization’s areas of focus and mission. The Director will develop a comprehensive development strategy and drive all aspects of implementation, including prospecting, cultivation, stewardship, and management and work closely with the Executive Director, Finance Director, Board and staff to develop and maintain sources of support (individual, foundation, corporate, and government).

Overview of Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Regular duties on an ongoing basis include the following, in addition to other duties that may be assigned:

1. Fund Development

  •     Help design, manage, and implement an annual development plan, including social media, mail campaigns, and other strategies, to increase revenue from law firms, private foundations, individuals, and corporations.
  •  Creating in partnership with Executive Director and Finance Director a development budget that establishes projected revenue and expenses for the upcoming fiscal year.
  •  Identify, research and evaluate prospects in collaboration with the Executive Director, LCCR Management Team, Board, staff and network.
  •  Manage a portfolio of potential donors which includes cultivation and stewardship processes. Hold regular meetings to update and plan with Executive Director to maintain steady progress.
  •  Support the Executive Director in building donor relationships.
  •  Manage the grant portfolio, which includes drafting and preparing solicitations, proposals, grant reports and other materials on a regular and timely basis. Manage a grant calendar with due dates and adequately give staff notice and support in their role in the process.
  •  Manage and plan annual donor events, collaborate with consultants, and support other development strategies.

2. Database and Records Management

  •  Maintain security and quality controls for all fundraising related records and materials.
  •  Maintain relevant Salesforce donor database and any other paper records of contributors.
  •  Maintain accurate records of contributions, grant agreements, deadlines, associated documents, correspondence and other information about donors and prospects.
  •  Generate regular fundraising reports to evaluate progress and inform decision-making.
  •  Analyze and generate queries, reports, exports and any other data collection as needed. Assist management and finance staff in ensuring fiscal accountability.
  •  Help to manage any donor or data related vendors.

3. Communications and Public Relations

  •  Prepare and present solicitation and other donor presentations. Train and support other staff in donor cultivation, stewardship and engagement.
  •  Develop and collaborate with Communications staff to create development related material, including annual report, marketing and event materials.
  •  Help to leverage the organization’s website, social networks and other media channels for fund development purposes.
  •  Contact donors and speak on behalf of LCCR about ongoing engagement and giving opportunities.

4. Strategic Planning and Implementation

  •  Support the achievement of the organization’s short- and long-term goals.

Description of Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights of the San Francisco Bay Area (Lawyers’ Committee) was founded in 1968 and works to advance the legal rights of communities of color, low-income people, immigrants, and refugees. Assisted by hundreds of pro bono attorneys, Lawyers’ Committee provides free legal assistance and representation in civil legal matters through direct services, impact litigation, policy advocacy, and public education.

Requirements: 

Overview of Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  •  Applicants must have a minimum of five years of development experience with significant emphasis
  • on individual and foundation donor relationships with at least one year of supervisory experience
  • preferred.
  •  A commitment to LCCR’s mission.
  •  Familiarity with civil rights and non-profit legal services organizations desired.
  •  Proven track record of achieving revenue targets of over $1M annually and participating in a multi-
  • faceted development program, including engaging Board and staff in fundraising.
  •  Proven ability to prospect, cultivate, and manage new and prospective donors.
  •      Ability to thrive under deadlines, have strong project, time, and budget management skills, and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously without sacrificing attention to detail.
  •      Poised, pro-active, problem solver, organized, and energetic self-starter with the willingness to work hands-on to develop and execute a variety of fundraising and communications activities.
  •      Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills. Confidence and the ability to present   information to donors and leaders in a compelling way. Ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  •      Ability to lead and keep others organized and on task.
  •      Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred. Law degree desired.
