The Public Relations Manager will assist the Communications Team with Texas RioGrande Legal Aid’s (TRLA) external communications. This Manager’s primary role is to work on TRLA’s media-driven projects, journal entries, as well as events, and other copy needs. 

The position reports to the Director of Strategic Initiatives and works in close collaboration with the entire Communications Team in developing overall goals and strategies with and for the media. The Public Relations Manager will work with TRLA’s civil practice area teams to develop and implement media plans for specific campaigns, outreach activities, and litigation goals. 

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Draft press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, talking points/messaging, and other PR-related materials 

  • Interact with journalists, bloggers, freelancers, and other professionals  

  • Build new relationships with journalists 

  • Identify news story opportunities 

  • Pitch story ideas to reporters, producers, and other news professionals 

  • Spearhead press briefings and news conferences 

  • Lead staff interview preparation  

  • Develop local, state, and national media lists 

  • Monitor TRLA mentions across media platforms and identify appropriate use(s) 

  • Stay abreast of best PR practices and tools 

  • Assist with PR measurement  

  • Develop a PR long-term action plan 

  • Assist in updating areas of our website

Requirements: 
Minimum qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism or a related degree; minimum of 4 years of professional public relations or journalism experience working at a PR agency, in a newsroom, a nonprofit, or business; excellent writing skills; excellent editing skills, including regular use of the Associated Press (AP) Stylebook; highly organized, with the ability to manage various projects and tasks under different time constraints; strong attention to detail; and strong oral communication skills. 

Must be adept at communicating and interacting with diverse groups of people, including community partners, board members, journalists, and people of varied economic, racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds; Ability to work independently and as part of a team; incorporates and considers all PR/communications aspects, from social media to video, to ensure those elements are incorporated into overall PR plans; commitment to social, economic, and racial justice. 

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to prioritize and execute multiple concurrent projects; Ability to travel; Strong knowledge of Office 365 suite; video production experience; Ability to work evenings and weekends when needed.
