Pro Bono - Program Specialist

The mission of the ABA Standing Committee on Pro Bono and Public Service is mission is to ensure access to justice through the expansion and enhancement of the delivery of legal and other law-related services to the underserved through volunteer efforts of legal professionals nationwide. The Pro Bono Program Specialist is responsible for the management and implementation of select programs, projects, and activities of the ABA Center for Pro Bono, including the ABA/NLADA Equal Justice Conference, ABA Free Legal Answers and the National Celebration of Pro Bono. Working with a team of staff and members, the Pro Bono Program Specialist has responsibility for the entity's program/project budgets and provides substantive support to staff, members and constituents; is responsible for the execution of the programs/projects, including, but not limited to budgeting of resources, fundraising for projects that require outside funding support, marketing of projects and activities, and oversight of meetings and special events.

Job Summary/General Purpose of Job

The Pro Bono Program Specialist is responsible for the management and implementation of select programs, projects, and activities of the ABA Center for Pro Bono, including the ABA/NLADA Equal Justice Conference, ABA Free Legal Answers and the National Celebration of Pro Bono. Working with a team of staff and members, the Pro Bono Program Specialist has responsibility for the entity's program/project budgets and provides substantive support to staff, members and constituents; is responsible for the execution of the programs/projects, including, but not limited to budgeting of resources, fundraising for projects that require outside funding support, marketing of projects and activities, and oversight of meetings and special events.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities (listed in order of importance and/or time spent)

  • Manages the day-to-day organization and implementation of one or more programs or projects, including planning projects and events, overseeing budgets, and ensuring compliance with ABA policies.
  • Advises member leaders on strategy and procedures, including analysis of opportunities and risks, to ensure projects move forward in a productive manner.
  • Serves as principal point of contact for projects, both internally and externally. Initiates regular communications with member leaders and staff, including reporting on progress and results.
  • Coordinates with other interested entities on joint projects, proactively seeking both internal and external partners—including state and local bar associations, law schools, and other national organizations working on access to justice issues. This responsibility may include solicitation and management of sponsorship revenue.
  • Updates and maintains a clearinghouse of pro bono related documents.
  • Serves as a resource person for both internal and external audiences regarding pro bono management.
  • Develops and manages online strategies including website, online communities, social media presence and online publications.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Required Education, Qualifications, Experience

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and at least three years' experience; OR, possession of a high school diploma or GED and at least five years’ relevant professional experience.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with MS Office suite, Access, Data Visualization, AEM (Adobe Experience Manager)

Preferred Education, Qualifications, Experience

  • Management and/or supervisory experience, preferably in an association or non-profit setting to include analytical problem solving ability, and programmatic and policy development.
  • Prior experience overseeing budgets and fundraising is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and access to justice.
  • Familiarity with Qualtrics, Microsoft Access and HTML
  • Ability to communicate effectively, possesses strong interpersonal and self-management skills.
  • Background in statistical analysis preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Typical office work environment.

Extent of Travel Required in the Job

  • As a normal course of business, this job will typically require travel of less than 15% of the time.
