Pro Bono Coordinator

Maryland Center for Legal Assistance (MCLA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Maryland Legal Aid, operates the District Court Self-Help Resource Centers and the Maryland Courts Self-Help Centers through a contract with the Administrative Office of the Courts. MCLA has established a Pro Bono Program to recruit, train, coordinate, and facilitate the work of pro bono attorneys who are interested in serving self-represented litigants.

Among the activities with which pro bono attorneys may become involved are: 1) live chat services at hours best suited to the attorneys to supplement the work of the Maryland Courts Self-Help Center; 2) face-to-face consultations with self-represented litigants at District Court walk-in sites and 3) direct legal assistance at an expungement clinic in the Upper Marlboro District Court walk-in location. As part of this program, MCLA announces the availability of a full-time Pro Bono Coordinator position, reporting to the MCLA Managing Director.

The Coordinator has the following responsibilities: 1- Develop and maintain relationships with law firms, solo practitioners, law schools, bar associations, and affiliate pro bono groups across Maryland to recruit and retain pro bono attorney volunteers; 2- Create unique and engaging opportunities for pro bono attorneys to volunteer with MCLA; 3- Maintain pro bono volunteer training materials and agreements; 4- Coordinate the schedules of pro bono volunteers to efficiently meet the needs of MCLA; 5- Provide support to pro bono attorneys volunteering at MCLA offices; 6- Track the contributions and engagement of pro bono attorney volunteers; 7- Assist with the coordination of recognition events for pro bono volunteers; 8- Ensure that MCLA’s pro bono work is reported accurately on a monthly basis; and 9- Other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will be able to communicate effectively and persuasively both orally and in writing, and be able to take initiative, multi-task, and work independently. The candidate should also be able to cultivate and maintain strong relationships with the private bar. Qualifications: Admission to Maryland Bar or another state bar and eligibility and willingness to take the first available Maryland Bar examination. At least three years of relevant experience, preferably in the delivery of civil legal services or the delivery of pro bono services. Project management experience preferred. Able to travel statewide. Spanish language proficiency desirable.
