Part-Time Low Income Tax Clinic Paralegal
Gulfcoast Legal Services, a nonprofit civil legal aid provider, is seeking a part-time paralegal to join our Financial Stability program and assist with our Low Income Taxpayer Clinic in our Bradenton office. Candidates should be comfortable working with people of all backgrounds including survivors of abuse, crime, and trauma.
This is a professional position. Paralegals work under the direct supervision of staff attorneys to help clients solve legal problems. Paralegals should be able to work independently and responsibly. Candidates must be Spanish speaking bilingual.
Core Responsibilities:
- Abide by the Florida Bar Rules on the unauthorized practice of law and the functions which non-lawyer personnel may perform in a law office
- Interview clients in person and remotely, to gather information, applications, witness statements, etc.
- Prepare cases, pleadings, briefs, and other complex legal documents under attorney supervision
- Quickly perform thorough legal research
- Represent clients at administrative hearings, exercising primary responsibility for case files of such clients, under the supervision of an attorney
- Determine client eligibility, schedule client appointments as needed and check for client conflicts
- Maintain client confidentiality
Education/Experience Requirements
- A commitment to the provision of high-quality legal services
- Prior experience in a clerical or administrative support position required; two years as a legal secretary preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree or Associate degree in legal assistance and/or paralegal studies preferred
- Florida Registered Paralegals and prior experience in tax law strongly preferred
- Spanish speaking bilingual required
