Paralegal (Family Law)

Summary:

603 Legal Aid (603 LA) is seeking an experienced family law paralegal to provide high quality legal advice and brief services to clients eligible for 603 LA’s services who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking or are otherwise facing legal challenges arising from family law issues. Working under the supervision of a staff attorney the paralegal will identify and implement the most appropriate strategy for meeting client needs, working collaboratively with 603 LA’s Pro Bono Program and DOVE Project, NHLA’s DVAP initiative, and crisis center advocates to facilitate the full utilization of statewide resources. 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide counsel and advice and limited scope brief services to clients eligible for 603 LA’s services;
  • Coordinate with appropriate 603 LA staff on assessing client needs, identifying relevant services and supporting efforts to help clients resolve their legal issues;
  • Network and interact with crisis center staff, NHLA partners, volunteer attorneys and others;
  • Assist with case management;
  • Collect and manage data for statewide planning and project evaluation purposes;
  • Ability to work independently, work well on a team and possess a willingness to collaborate; 
  • Professional demeanor in interactions with co-workers, supervisors, and colleagues in the broader legal community;
  • Collegial and collaborative approach to the delivery of legal services in New Hampshire;
  • Possess a strong interest in community engagement; and
  • Ability to apply creative approaches to problem-solving.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Familiarity with NH family and housing law and public benefits programs.
  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking, including trauma informed practice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Facility with technology and the accurate collection of data.
  • Thorough knowledge of office operations as they apply to applicant screening and the provision of legal assistance.
  • Must have outstanding communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced work environment;
  • Strong client-first work ethic;
  • Must be attentive to detail, work well under pressure, and the ability to manage simultaneous and tight deadlines; 
  • Ability to work independently, work well on a team and possess a willingness to collaborate;

Salary/Benefits:

This position is full-time (37.5 hours weekly) and considered hourly non-exempt for the purpose of federal wage/hour law. Salary DOE, expected to range from $25.00 to $27.00 per hour, plus benefits package including medical, retirement, life and disability and generous paid time off. The Paralegal position is based in our Concord, NH office.

Requirements: 

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • A paralegal certificate and at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified;
  • Degree in related field may substitute for paralegal certificate or for 1 year of experience;
  • High level of proficiency using Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), database programs and an ability to quickly learn new systems; and
  • Commitment to and interest in expanding knowledge about access to justice and poverty.
