LASMNY is a non-profit public interest law firm.  We provide free legal information, advice and representation to people who are unable to afford a lawyer.  The program area includes (13) counties: Broome, Chenango, Cayuga, Cortland, Delaware, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, Oswego and Otsego.  In addition, our Farmworker Law Project services the entire New York State out of our New Paltz Office. 

LASMNY has full-time paralegal positions to provide support for Eviction Defense Program/Outreach, Intake/HelpLine and Disability Advocate Program (DAP).  The employment opportunities are available immediately in multiple locations.

 

Eviction Defense Program/Outreach Paralegal Supports the work of attorneys, primarily landlord-tenant matters, who are providing legal assistance and advocacy to individuals and families at risk of homelessness. Will travel for intake and outreach events.

Office Location – Syracuse, NY  

 

Intake/HelpLine Paralegal Primary responsibilities will be to screen calls from applicants seeking civil legal assistance to determine whether callers are eligible for assistance, open intakes in our case management system for eligible callers and follow intake protocols to properly refer callers. Office Location Utica, NY

 

Disability Advocate Program (DAP) Paralegal – Primary responsibilities include calling clients, observing in meetings and hearings, and assisting attorneys in preparation for administrative proceedings and hearings before Administrative Law Judges to obtain SSD/SSI benefits for clients.  Review and organize medical, educational, and vocational records to determine whether clients meet the rules for a finding of disability as defined by the Social Security Administration. Perform research and writing as directed.  Must satisfy all grant requirements and comply with all office policies and procedures. Office Location – Utica, NY

Job Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree, Associate’s degree, paralegal certificate or an equivalent combination of prior work experience.  Prior work experience preferably in a legal environment. Other qualifying factors include the nature and extent of prior relevant experience, knowledge and understanding of legal problems and needs of low-income persons, prior experience in the client community or in other programs to aid low income persons.  Bilingual or multilingual a plus.  

Salary

Estimated salary range is $40,250 - $61,378, dependent on experience.
