Managing Attorney (Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault)

JOB SUMMARY:  

The LASSA (Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault) Managing Attorney is to fulfill the mission of TLSC and the LASSA network by advising clients as to legal rights, and providing trauma-informed, holistic legal services, advice, and information by telephone and in-person.  The Legal Aid for Survivors of Sexual Assault (LASSA) network serves every Texas County by providing survivors of sexual assault with a wide range of free legal services from general advice to holistic, direct representation in civil legal matters stemming from the sexual assault. The Managing Attorney is responsible for her/his caseload, making relevant referrals  to network partners, supervising and mentoring LASSA staff, coordinating and supervising various program activities, and meeting grant reporting requirements. 

The attorney in this position is expected to:

  • Maintain the highest ethical and professional standards as a member of the State Bar of Texas;
  • Adhere to the American Bar Association Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Aid;
  • Embrace and support Texas Legal Service Center’s (TLSC) overall mission;
  • Comply with all grant requirements, regulations, standards, policies and confidentiality requirements.    

This is a grant-funded position. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Mentor and motivate staff by providing leadership, strategic thinking and team building.
  • Execute client intake interviews and upon confirmation of eligibility for services and screening for conflicts of interest, provide eligible clients with prompt, high quality, culturally sensitive, trauma informed legal assistance, and crisis managed attention (as necessary), or referrals to network partners.
  • Provide leadership and cultivate working relationships, internally, with network partners, with grantors and other social services agencies in the community, to advance program and organizational goals.
  • Lead and promote education efforts statewide and in local programs, including participation in various trainings aimed at law enforcement, attorneys, judges, and other social service providers.
  • Communicate with third parties on behalf of clients to resolve legal problems, or assist client in drafting pleadings.
  • Identify and publish self-help publications on laws that impact sexual assault and domestic violence survivors.
  • Actively participate in TLSC leadership team.
  • Assist in the development and procurement of grants and provide financial and program reporting as requested.
  • Travel to locations outside of the Austin area.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Participate in task forces and meetings with program staff to receive input and to provide support.
  • Develop, participate, and oversee specialized training programs as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/LICENSURE REQUIRED:

  • J.D. Degree  
  • Licensure by the Supreme Court of Texas

EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Minimum 6 years of law experience working with sexual assault survivors in Texas.  The requirement of at least 6 years of licensure can be waived with proof of a superior ability to apply the law pertaining to survivors of sexual assault. 
Requirements: 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Current knowledge and expertise of the law and legal system, especially in areas that impact domestic violence and affect survivors of sexual assault.
  • Experience with leading, mentoring, and motivating staff.
  • Proven ability to make tough decisions.
  • Training and/or experience in working with victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and trauma-informed advocacy.
  • Exceptional verbal, listening and written communications skills.
  • High-level organization skills. 
  • Strong time management and attention to detail skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to learn LegalServer (TLSC’s case management system), Adobe, Microsoft Office products, and social media tools.
  • Experience using or ability to learn technology, including virtual meeting software/technology, such as GoToWebinar, Zoom or Skype
  • Understanding of budget processes, grant requirements, and associated reporting needs.
  • Ability to work with clients in a patient, trauma informed and non-judgmental manner.
  • Ability to travel outside of Austin. 


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time.  
  • Occasional bending, squatting and kneeling. 
  • Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force is needed at times to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
