Managing Attorney

Description:

Position:

Managing Attorney position for Legal Services of Central New York, Inc. (LSCNY). The Managing Attorney will primarily supervise LSCNY staff attorneys and support staff working on the Central New York Legal Helpline and the Onondaga County Reentry Project. The position is located in our Syracuse office. Our Organization: Legal Services of Central New York (LSCNY) is committed to achieving justice for low-income people and those who have difficulty accessing the justice system. We are deeply committed to principles of anti-racism and race equity in all that we do. For 56 years, we have sought to make a difference in clients’ lives and their communities by eliminating the barriers that cause poverty or reduce our clients’ access to economic mobility. We continually search for ways to help people improve their lives and communities.

Responsibilities:

The Legal Helpline is a joint project with the Legal Aid Society of Mid New York (LASMNY). The Helpline is both a single-point-of-entry for applicants for both organizations and a source of legal advice by staff attorneys for callers where the legal matter presented is not assigned for full legal representation. Currently, LSCNY has four legal assistants taking calls and three full-time staff lawyers offering legal advice. LASMNY staff lawyers and legal assistants perform the same functions for callers. LSCNY and LASMNY Helpline staff meet weekly.

The LSCNY Reentry Project is funded by the Onondaga County Assigned Counsel Project to assist people with the collateral consequences of criminal convictions and provide technical assistance to attorneys in the Onondaga County Assigned Counsel Program. The Reentry Project can help correct clients’ NYS and FBI RAP sheet, help clients who are having trouble obtaining employment or housing because of their criminal convictions, and counsel clients on their voting rights. Project staff includes a staff attorney and an outreach specialist.
