Managing Attorney

Do you want a meaningful job that makes a real difference in your community and in the lives of your clients? Legal Aid of East Tennessee (LAET) seeks a full-time Managing Attorney for the firm’s four Knoxville area offices. The position will be based in the main Knoxville office. LAET is a nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services in civil matters to low-income residents of 26 East Tennessee counties, including Knox, Sevier, Loudon, and Blount counties. The Managing Attorney leads, directs, and manages the daily operations and supervises the staff in the main Knoxville office and other smaller area offices. The Managing Attorney also maintains an active caseload in LAET’s core areas, including consumer protection, eviction and foreclosure defense, protection of victims of domestic violence, and public benefit cases. In addition, the Managing Attorney promotes the visibility of LAET within the communities covered by the office and among members of the bar and judiciary. This position reports directly to the Director of Litigation & Advocacy.

Requirements: 

Highlighted Requirements: • Admitted to the Tennessee Bar or admitted to the bar of another state with the ability to waive into Tennessee. • At least eight years’ experience practicing law, with the ideal candidate having at least 10 years of civil legal experience with an emphasis on litigation. • Prior management or supervisory experience. Proven ability to lead a team of attorneys and paralegals. • A demonstrated commitment to high-quality legal work and equal access to justice. • Excellent interpersonal skills. • Demonstrated compassion for and experience working with the low-income, disabled, and elderly populations preferred. • Experience with an organization funded by Legal Services Corporation is a plus. • Experience working in a union environment is a plus. • Spanish language proficiency is highly desirable. Desired Skills & Competencies • High personal and professional integrity and the ability to maintain confidentiality and establish personal credibility within the organization, in the local legal community, and with external funders, community partners, and other stakeholders. • Self-motivated team player with ability to drive projects, identify and resolve legal and business issues, and earn the confidence and cooperation of colleagues. • Sound judgment and strong critical thinking and analytical skills. • Strong communication, writing, and organizational skills. • Experience working with all levels of an organization. • Ability to work collaboratively with clients and teams throughout the organization. • Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks. • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and in the use of other legal technology platforms. • Prior experience with Microsoft SharePoint is highly desirable.
