Intake and Outreach Advocate (Crime Survivor Program)

Disability Rights Oregon is seeking an Intake and Outreach Advocate for our Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Program who thrives in a team environment and has the drive and determination to advocate for people with disabilities who are survivors of crime.

The VOCA Intake and Outreach Advocate provides people with disabilities who are survivors of crime with options for self-advocacy, delivers information and referrals, performs intake interviews, and participates in limited agency outreach.

Requirements: 

 

What we are looking for:

  • Minimum of two years’ experience working with people with disabilities and people from diverse communities.
  • Strong commitment to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities and underserved populations of crime survivors.
  • Broad knowledge of services for people with disabilities and crime survivors.
  • Ability to work in a nonjudgmental way with survivors of violence and treat all people with dignity and respect.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and organize tasks.
  • Ability to obtain and process information and accurately present in both written and oral form
  • Bilingual in Spanish, American Sign Language, or second language, preferred.
  • This position requires occasional travel for approximately 10% of the position including potential overnights or multiple days.
  • Excellent communication and social skills including the ability to handle situations patiently and tactfully. Ability to listen and respond in a ethical manner in person and over the telephone (including TTY).
  • Ability to deal effectively with, and negotiate through, confrontational situations and stressful interactions with sensitivity, patience, and compassion to the concerns of persons with disabilities, people of diverse backgrounds, and the related communication needs.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence with clients. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Must be able to provide people with disabilities the opportunity for self-determination and empowerment.
  • Works collaboratively in a team environment.

 

What you can expect to accomplish:

  • Conduct intake interviews with clients who are survivors of crime to determine eligibility and services needed to perform initial intake screening in a timely manner.
  • Participate in intake meetings to provide appropriate background information to assist in case acceptance process.
  • Work within issue areas in identifying the intakes that meet VOCA Program priorities, at the direction of a managing attorney or their designee, provide further advocacy services, including but not limited to short-term assistance, written or oral advice, or contact with stakeholders.
  • Maintain up-to-date, accurate information, written materials, and resource referrals related to disability rights and related crime survivor issues.
  • Enter information into the client management system database (DAD) pursuant to DRO procedures and assist in data collection and preparation of statistical reports as requested.
  • Develop and maintain current, general knowledge of policies, laws, services, and issues relevant to clients with disabilities who are also survivors of crime.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings and in organizational events, collaborates on cross team projects, and works to enhance the visibility of the organization and further the rights of individuals with disabilities who are survivors of crime. 
  • Participate in agency outreach and public relations, as requested.
  • Assist in training of DRO staff and volunteers in areas relevant to the needs and rights of individuals with disabilities.
  • Some travel may be required.

What is the Duration of this Position?

This is grant-funded positions for 3-years. Although the grant is expected to end on December 31, 2023, the hope is that additional funding will be obtained to extend employment.
