Overview

The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking an experienced HR Director. The position is located in our Albany, New York office.  Legal Aid’s mission is to fight for fairness, dignity, and justice for those living in poverty and for a society that is inclusive and equitable for all. JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective

The Human Resource Director will plan, lead, direct, develop, and coordinate the policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organization's mission and talent strategy. The HR Director will help build an organizational culture that supports the advancement of Legal Aid’s mission and strategic plan.

 

Position Requirements

  1. Ability to travel both locally, within the service area in New York, and elsewhere as needed.
  2. Must have reliable transportation and driver’s license.
  3. Must have a SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM®-CP) certificate, SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) credential or the equivalent.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field required;
  2. At least five years of human resource management experience;
  3. Experience with DEIB initiatives and a commitment to a DEIB agenda; and
  4. Payroll and HR software experience.

 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • A master's degree in human resource management; 
  • Ten years' experience working in human resources;
  • Experience with Unionized Staff, CBA and grievance procedures; and
  • Ability to speak Spanish.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff in the department.
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the department.
  • Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.
  • Handles discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy, and the CBA.

 

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Plans, leads, develops, coordinates, and implements policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization's human resource compliance and strategy needs.
  • Administers or oversees the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
  • Identifies staffing and recruiting needs; develops and executes best practices for hiring and talent management.
  • Conducts research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from the organization's human resource information system (HRIS) or talent management system.
  • Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to upper management.
  • Works closely with the Chief Diversity Officer/Race Equity Director (CDO/RED) in implementing DEI Program, policies, and initiatives. 
  • As requested, assists the CDO/RED in ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local employment laws.
  • As needed, may assist the CDO/RED in investigating complaints under the unlawful harassment and discrimination policy.
  • Mediates personnel disputes and assists, as requested, in the resolution of Union grievances.
  • Implements and maintains Human Resource Management System (HRIS) to track critical data for recruitment, onboarding, and retention.
  • Develops and implements departmental budget.
  • Facilitates professional development, training, and certification activities for HR staff.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional law office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and software and remote videoconferencing platforms.

Salary and Benefits

Please note that the salary is based on experience, between $85,000-$100,000, plus generous benefits.
