Housing Supervising Attorney

Join the Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) and become part of an energetic team of advocates. NLSLA is seeking a Supervising Attorney for our Eviction Trial Attorney Team. The candidates must have a demonstrated passion and commitment to public interest law and prior supervisorial experience on housing and eviction matters. The Supervising Attorney is also expected to maintain expertise on a range of housing related matters, included local rent stabilization ordinances, relevant housing policy issues, subsidized housing, and other eviction related matters.

Position: Housing Supervising Attorney Los Angeles, CA

Availability: Open Immediately.

Compensation: Salary $90,000.00 - Commensurate with experience. Excellent Benefits which include: choice of medical, dental, vision; life and disability insurance plans; 125 plan; 403(b) with employer contribution, loan reimbursement, bilingual pay supplement, sick and vacation pay, and 13 employer-paid holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for overseeing housing attorneys in the delivery of unlawful detainer (eviction) services, including the preparation of answers to complaints, legal information, referrals, and representation at trial. Prepare staff work plans/performance evaluations with final edits/approval by senior management team. Assist with grant management including tracking progress towards grant deliverables. Coordination and attendance at monthly management meetings, case reviews and partner’s meetings. The Supervising Attorney will also be expected to establish systems to organize the team’s work-flow, mentor team members and provide substantive legal supervision over the team’s housing cases. This candidate will also be expected to monitor and identify systemic issues arising out of the direct services work for broader policy advocacy and/or affirmative litigation. Minimum

The NLSLA staff of 135+, including 55 lawyers, provides legal assistance to low-income individuals, families and groups in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing, health care, education, public benefits, economic and job development, immigrant rights, consumer rights and environmental justice. The NLSLA headquarters is located in Glendale, CA with branch offices in Pacoima, and El Monte. Through a combination of individual representation, high impact litigation, self-help services and public policy advocacy, NLSLA combats the immediate and long-lasting effects of poverty and expands access to health, opportunity and justice in Los Angeles’ diverse neighborhoods. Requirements: 

California Bar membership is required. Highly motivated attorney passionate about public service work, with sensitivity to those in crisis. A proven leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and experience working both attorneys and paralegals. 4-5 years’ experience preferred. Excellent writing, speaking and organizational skills and the proven ability to communicate effectively with clients, community organizations, attorneys, the judiciary and the public as well as demonstrated capacity to mentor paralegals, attorneys, and students. Experience advocating for individuals or other advocacy work involving housing issues preferred; Bilingual skills in Spanish or Korean preferred, but not required.
