Suffolk, VA

The Virginia Legal Aid Society, Inc. is seeking a motivated, hard-working, and creative attorney to assist its clients with housing cases in its Suffolk, Virginia office. This is an exciting and fast-paced position that involves direct client contact and ownership of cases from open to close including research, investigation, negotiation, drafting court filings and settlement agreements, and appearances before administrative agencies as well as state and federal courts.

In addition to casework, this attorney will provide outreach and education to the public including tenants, landlords, and community partners. An attorney in this position will have the opportunity to make real and immediate impacts in the lives of low-income members of the community while working in a supportive and collegial office environment staffed with other professionals committed to improving the lives of those in poverty.

Practice with VLAS includes extensive training and development of advocacy abilities under the guidance of skilled and innovative trial attorneys as well as state and national training opportunities. Leadership opportunities are available in leading one of our practice units, our five offices and our newer advocates.  VLAS is also a family-friendly employer that provides flexibility in work hours and locations and generous health and leave benefits. 

 This is a one-year grant-funded position with possible extensions.

 

 

COMPENSATION:

 Hiring Salary Range: depending upon experience

Requirements: 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: admitted to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible for admission. 

Preferred: demonstrated commitment to the zealous provision of legal services to the poor; understanding of the dynamics of housing law and its impact upon low-income people; ability to develop effective rapport with diverse client community, staff, and agency partners. Spanish language ability a plus.
