Family Law Paralegal
Philadelphia Legal Assistance (PLA) seeks to immediately hire a full-time paralegal for its Family Law Unit. PLA is a non-profit legal services organization primarily funded by the Legal Services Corporation. PLA serves approximately 3,000 clients each year in the area of Family Law and views the practice of family law to be an integral part of the war on poverty.
The paralegal will assist a staff attorney to provide representation to non-citizen victims of sexual assault and family violence in domestic relations proceedings as part of a grant from the United States Department of Justice Violence Against Women Act Office. The paralegal will coordinate intake between PLA and the other agencies providing holistic services to victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. A primary goal of the position is to assist survivors to escape the violence in their lives through a holistic approach of legal representation coordinated with counseling and social services. The family law paralegal will assist clients in a variety of domestic relations matters, including custody, support, divorce and protection from abuse. This assistance includes client interviews, pleading preparation, litigation coordination, and other routine paralegal duties. The family law paralegal will also perform intake, outreach and community education to various client and advocate groups throughout Philadelphia.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary is commensurate with years of experience and is comparable to other public interest paralegal salaries. Full health coverage and other benefits.
College graduate preferred. Commitment to family violence issues preferred. Ability to interact well with people and handle emotional issues. Prior work experience at a public interest law firm or in the area of family law preferred but not necessary. Ability to speak and write Spanish required.
